Summer Camp Gets Underway at Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center
Written by: Rebecca Walton
Client: Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center
Release Date: 2010-06-14
Loxahatchee, FL- June 14, 2010 – Summer Camp sessions recently got underway at Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center (VTRC) with four weeks of exciting activities. The camp sessions started on June 7, 2010 and will run through July 2, 2010, in addition to the regular Summer Session with 40 riders per week. Each session lasts one week and hosts six or seven riders, including those who have been diagnosed with Downs Syndrome, ADD, Aspergers, Autism and Depression.
During the camp sessions, riders have the opportunity to tack, ride and care for their horses, which teaches the riders about responsibility and work ethic. Each day's session begins with campers participating in a horse related craft and then tacking up their horses to go riding. Campers learn a different riding skill every day, some of which include steering though an obstacle course, vaulting moves, and pole bending. After the campers are done riding, they untack their horses and clean their tack. Following a lunch break the campers have lessons in the classroom about caring for the horses, and the day ends with another horse related craft.
Each week of the camp features a different theme, beginning with a focus on recycling, endangered animals and nature. During Week One, campers had the opportunity to make horses out of cans, corks, and hay string, and participate in recycling relays.
Additional crafts have also included making bird feeders from pinecones found around the barn, peanut butter and bird feed. The riders spent one day focusing on American Indians and how they depended on horses to survive.
During the following weeks, the campers will learn about horses around the world and they will be taught how to say “good morning” and “horse” in different languages. A number of the campers have been students at VTRC for many years, but some are brand new to the horse world and are just learning to ride. They are enjoying having the opportunity to learn new horse facts and create fun crafts.
The VTRC is a nonprofit organization based in Loxahatchee, FL, that provides recreational and therapeutic riding instruction to people of all ages with varying developmental, physical, and psychological disabilities. The organization, founded in 1982, assists more than 350 adults and children every year, helping them gain a sense of accomplishment, greater independence, and a higher quality of life. The VTRC has received a "Premier Accreditation" rating from the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA).

As the Countdown Continues...
Just three days until the Opening Ceremonies for one of the most important tributes to the Arabian breed, the Al-Marah Arabian Horse Galleries at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky. Below is the last only-for-AHA-members, sneak-peek at the process of making The Galleries come to life. Please enjoy and we hope to see you in Lexington, Saturday, June 12, 2010.
The hallowed halls of Janow Podlaski, the state stud of Poland, represents decades of history dedicated to the Polish Arabian horse that still is preserved to this day. In this photo, you can also see elements of other European studs that prominently rippled the Arabian horse’s spread of influence, particularly in the creation of other breeds like the Thoroughbred.

Change in Canadian Import Protocol
Change in Canadian Import Protocol
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) recently announced a change in the import protocol for semen originating from other countries, including the United States.
Following the restrictions implemented as a result of the Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM) outbreak in the U.S., equine semen--both cooled and frozen--from that country has been subject to inspection and additional paperwork requirements at the time of import. The inspection has been performed by Canada Border Services Agency ("CBSA," formerly "Canada Customs"). This indicates that instead of the semen and associated paperwork being inspected by a regular customs agent, it will have to be referred to the CFIA veterinary inspection agent. It is unclear at this time if this is going to cause additional potential for delays or other problems.

Club News: Midwest Horse Fair Wrap-Up
Club News: Midwest Horse Fair Wrap-Up
By Eleanore Chiquoine, Marie Stewart, and Amy Ziegler
Rising to this year's "Let the Games Begin!" theme, the Wisconsin Morgan Horse Club (WMHC) had a winning presence at the 2010 Midwest Horse Fair. Preliminary numbers show that Friday's attendance set a record (18,500) and the total attendance for this year's three-day event exceeded last year's by 4,000 for a total attendance this year of 54,000. This is a great venue for promoting the Morgan breed!
The WMHC booth was located near the front of Barn #1, so a maximum number of visitors had the opportunity to meet and greet Morgans in our attractive booth area. In keeping with the "Games" theme, classical Greek cornices and columns topped royal blue backdrops and drapes. Raffle items such as a wooden saddle rack and two free Breyer horse drawings drew visitors into the booth, where they could then choose from a wide assortment of Morgan literature for all ages. Morgan horse buttons and tattoos were a big hit!
Twelve Morgans participated this year, including six stallions. The stallions were THI Cherokee, owned by Paula and David Neice; Bethesda Horus, owned by Katz and Gary Jackson; Red Rose Moonshine, owned by Suzanne Johnson and Dale Hammonds; Treble's Mucho Uno, owned by Rocky and Diana Schliefer; JCW Revs Cajun Sundancer, owned by Carolyn Harris; and HyLee Galaxy's Wild Irish, owned by HyLee Farm.
The mares and geldings participating were Baroncrest Oberon, owned by Adrienne and Larry Gage; Gable's Grindelwald, owned by Sam Bartnik and Mary Ellen Gray; Rustic V Total Revelation, owned by Rustic View Farm; Dragonsmeade Hot Ticket, owned by Eastwich Morgans; W's Ready To Rumble, owned and shown by Joann Ace; and TVT Invictus, owned by Sara Clark.
Though experienced show horses, three of the four horses in the booth had never been to something like the Midwest Horse Fair. However, nothing phased these horses, not the crush of the crowd, the hands reaching toward a soft nose, or the flash of cameras and ringing of cell phones. In typical Morgan fashion, the horses impressed everyone with their steadiness and affability. The club used an empty stall for demonstrations on body clipping and show presentation.
The crowds watched Morgans in the breed demonstrations being ridden in western, hunter seat, and English pleasure, driven, executing reining patterns, and even doing a mounted shooting demonstration. In other demonstrations, THI Cherokee participated in the Liberty demonstrations and HyLee's Galaxy's Wild Irish participated in the Stallion Avenue Revue. Joann Ace and W's Ready To Rumble won a reserve title in the Wind Rider Challenge. In this popular event, horse and rider compete on a course that includes challenges drawn from gymkhana, Dressage, reining patterns, jousting, trail obstacles, hunter/jumper courses, and more.
The 2010 Midwest Horse Fair was a real winner. The Morgans looked sleek and fit, behaved well, and brought home the gold for WMHC!

Cornell assisting in the creation of a veterinary school in Hong Kong
Cornell University and The City University of Hong Kong have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish terms of collaboration for the creation of the first veterinary medicine academic program in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR). Under the prospective collaboration agreement, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine would provide in-depth and ongoing advice and guidance to City University in the planning, establishment, operation, and evaluation of the new School of Veterinary Medicine, with the goal of securing international accreditation in the future. The School will offer a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine degree, granted by the City University of Hong Kong. Cornell University and City University expect this School to serve as an international center of excellence in veterinary medicine in Asia. The international collaboration is motivated by a growing awareness of the need to develop strong programs in veterinary public health as a response to the increasing global threats of zoonotic diseases and of outbreaks of food and water-borne diseases.
