Loxahatchee, FL- June 14, 2010 – Summer Camp sessions recently got
underway at Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center (VTRC) with four weeks of
exciting activities. The camp sessions started on June 7, 2010 and will run
through July 2, 2010, in addition to the regular Summer Session with 40 riders
per week. Each session lasts one week and hosts six or seven riders, including
those who have been diagnosed with Downs Syndrome, ADD, Aspergers, Autism and
Depression.
During the camp sessions, riders have the opportunity to
tack, ride and care for their horses, which teaches the riders about
responsibility and work ethic. Each day's session begins with campers
participating in a horse related craft and then tacking up their horses to go
riding. Campers learn a different riding skill every day, some of which include
steering though an obstacle course, vaulting moves, and pole bending. After the
campers are done riding, they untack their horses and clean their tack.
Following a lunch break the campers have lessons in the classroom about caring
for the horses, and the day ends with another horse related craft.
Each
week of the camp features a different theme, beginning with a focus on
recycling, endangered animals and nature. During Week One, campers had the
opportunity to make horses out of cans, corks, and hay string, and participate
in recycling relays.
Additional crafts have also included making bird
feeders from pinecones found around the barn, peanut butter and bird feed. The
riders spent one day focusing on American Indians and how they depended on
horses to survive.
During the following weeks, the campers will learn
about horses around the world and they will be taught how to say “good morning”
and “horse” in different languages. A number of the campers have been students
at VTRC for many years, but some are brand new to the horse world and are just
learning to ride. They are enjoying having the opportunity to learn new horse
facts and create fun crafts.
The VTRC is a nonprofit organization based
